Typical characteristics of Dutch buildings

In several places in Indonesia in particular, we still encounter many Dutch houses or buildings. These buildings are one of the traces of Dutch colonialism in the past. Many of these buildings are still intact and some are inhabited. The Dutch house has strong characteristics and deep historical value. This characteristic design is able to give the impression of a relationship with the past. So there is nothing wrong with many people who think that the Dutch house is synonymous with a haunted impression.

Architecture and Design

The most visible architectural characteristic of Dutch houses is the use of roofs. In addition, the appearance of the exterior or facade of Dutch houses tends to be symmetrical, although there are also some Dutch houses that apply their own asymmetrical facades. Facades are usually in the form of a rectangle, pentagon, or hexagon. The entrance door can be built in the middle of the facade, it can also be on the right bank. Another feature of the architectural design of this Dutch house is that it usually has thick walls. Not infrequently, this design makes it indirectly give a cold impression when you enter it, even though the weather conditions at that time were quite hot. The prowess of this design also lies in its bold play of threads and more in exposing architectural details with a high degree of fidelity.

The room plan in a Dutch house is not much different from the room plan in an ordinary house, where there is a dining area, family area, bedroom and guest room. The top floor is used for children's rooms. In the middle of the room, there is a central area that directly leads to the main rooms in the house.

Artworks

The Dutch house itself also has artistic value that is displayed in several corners of the room. One of them is painting from oil paint, because in the past the Dutch were fond of exploring various places in the world by sea, not infrequently in the case of works of art, seascapes were most often found in Dutch paintings. Not surprisingly, the most popular paintings at that time were maritime-themed paintings.

The Dutch house itself when viewed in terms of design and character itself also has its advantages and disadvantages,

Advantages of Dutch building

The character of the Dutch house design is usually not too high and is rarely made terraced. Even if they are made into a multi-storey building, they prefer to apply a building of 1, 5 floors, where the top floor is not as big as the lower floor. With the design tends to be stable, traditional, but able to give a comfortable impression. With the size of the building that is not too high, the Dutch house is suitable as a place to live for families with small children who are currently growing. In addition, the slightly curved roof of the Dutch house also provides its own advantages. We can more easily add floors without being overwhelmed by too much cost.
